Laptop shuts down when closing lid

However, I've already worked to resolve this and I'm confident that it's not an overheating issue in this instance. The laptop had previously encountered random shutdowns due to overheating. Prior experience and research suggests that I could be looking at the following as potential reasons for the fault:

I'd like to get a list of possible causes before I begin the troubleshooting. While this may save power, its not ideal if you. However, I have already had the user attempt to move the laptop with the AC adapter plugged in and the battery disconnected and the problem persisted. By default, most laptops are designed to shut down or go into sleep mode as soon as you close the lid. I've not yet got the laptop in front of me and so I haven't had a chance to look for any glaringly obvious faults. If it's left in one place it will perform normally but as soon as the user attempts to move it to another location while it's still on it seems to turn itself off. I need to investigate an issue with a custom-built laptop that's turning off when it's moved from a static position.
